Ian's Implant Journey

Case Study: Anterior implant retained bridge by Dr.Chia Yeoh
Date of completion: December 2022

Initial Presentation

Ian was referred to me to help find a solution for his failing front teeth. Ian had a failing bridge from his three front teeth (his upper right lateral incisor to his upper left central incisor). They were very brittle due to a history of root canals and posts and were subsequently removed.

Due to the number of replacement teeth required, the only two options available to Ian were a removal denture, which Ian quickly dismissed, or an implant retained bridge, which Ian was keen to proceed with.

 Digital Scans

Digital, intra-oral scans were taken so we could study Ian’s bite and a 3D X-ray/CBCT scan (Cone-beam computed tomography)  was taken to examine bone levels and anatomy in the areas of interest.

CBCT

A CBCT scan was used to digitally plan Ian’s implant positions with precision.

Cutting edge CAD (Computer Aided Design) implant planning software was used  to design the shape of the new implant bridge congruent with Ian’s other teeth. We overlaid the bridge design over Ian’s CBCT scan to determine the optimal position of the implants.

Once the implant positions were finalised, a ‘“surgical guide’”  was designed to guide the implant surgery. This is 3D printed template, akin to a “jig” in woodwork and allows the implant surgeon to prepare the implant site and place the implants precisely, with with   accuracy to the order of microns. The surgical guides and prosthetic were and planning models were then constructed in house, in Perfect 32’s own , onsite digital laboratory.

The surgery was uneventful and consisted of two implants (Straumann BLT SLActive) and bone grafting. Total surgery time was just over 1 hour and the patient reported minimal post-operative discomfort.

Final Result

After 15 weeks of healing, digital scans were taken to determine the implant position and after a further three weeks the final bridge was fitted. At his review visit, Ian reported excellent speech and functionality and both Ian and I were delighted with the final result.

Implants can be a life changing treatment, allowing patients to eat and speak just like they did before they lost their original teeth. If you have any missing teeth or tired of dentures and are interested in fixed teeth as options, our team would be delighted to help start your implant journey.
